KDR Girls triumph in York RI Gala
Sunday 15th May 2016
KDR Girls U10s and U11s competed in the York RI Gala, joining 350-400 girls playing from U10s to U16s, which was fantastic to see.
Despite unluckily losing our first game to a deflected own goal the U10s did not lose again in the league stages - coming back from 2 goals down in one game and winning a match with the last kick of the game in another. Despite losing our goalkeeper to injury in the last round robin match they won the semi final and played Scarborough Ladies in the final. We thought we'd opened the scoring in the first thirty seconds with a goal off the underside of the bar but in scenes reminiscent of Frank Lampard's non goal against Germany in the 2010 World Cup, while we were celebrating Scarborough were attacking as the ref said it hadn't crossed the line (unbelievably goal line technology wasn't in place!). The girls though collected themselves and played sensibly and brilliantly to win and bring home a very big trophy.
The U11s, ably managed by Rob Foster began with two crushing wins and then only lost once in the league stage to Fulford, drawing the other 3 matches. This meant they met Fulford again in the semi final and the KDR girls were excellent as they won playing some fantastic football to blow Fulford away in the first half then kept them out with some real 'bodies on the line' defending. The final was against Poppleton whom they had previously drawn with. After a long day and with weary legs after the Schools Tournament the previous day the girls battled really hard and the game went to extra time still scoreless. It remained 0-0 and the championship went to penalties. It remained tied after the first 3 penalties before Poppleton's keeper pushed a shot onto the post and it stayed out. Despite only conceding in one game out of eight they left as runners up.
A fantastic day for KDR girls football - to add to the achievements of the U13s Girls this season. The U11s and U10s were absolutely magnificent all day and made KDR JFC proud with their skill, determination, character, camaraderie & team spirit and good sporting behaviour.
