Match Reports April 1st & 2nd 2017
Very tough games for the U9s against Ripon. Despite great weather at Grange Park it didn't help us as we had just one sub whereas Ripon brought a squad of 21 so were much fresher. The lads were exhausted at the end but again delivered the goods, coming away with four very hard fought victories.
A battle of the basement for U16s at Thackley. Playing with only 10 players we went a goal down early on but managed to level before half time. Our missing player arrived in time for the second half, and the team grew in confidence. We dominated thereafter going 3-1 up but a late Thackley penalty ensured a nervous finish. Final score 3-2.
U17s progressed to the knockout stages of the Styan Cup thanks to a hard earned but entertaining 2-1 win against Ilkley Blues at Grange Park. Deighton opened the scoring after only 6 minutes when a through ball from Harry Clinker found Colum Fletcher who shot accurately from the edge of the box into the bottom left hand corner of the box. Shortly afterwards, KDR goalie Rowan Bentley dived bravely at the feet of two Ilkley strikers to preserve the lead. Mid way through the first half, Deighton had a great chance to double their lead but from a perfect cross by Josh Quinn, Colum could only head over.
In the second half, KDR continued to dominate possession but mised a number of great chances and seemed to have paid the price when an Ilkley striker robbed the ball from the feet of the Deighton keeper and scored from a tight angle. However, KDR finally got the goal they deserved when Ilkley handballed from a corner and Sam Monaghan neatly converted the penalty. The Kirby Builders Merchants Man of the Match award went to Tom Megginson for a commanding all round performance with honourable mentions to Tom Pearson and Callum Unsworth.
