U12s Girls at the Brayton Belles gala

Kirk Deighton Rangers Girls U12s took two teams to Selby College on Sunday 11th June 2017 to take part in the Brayton Belles gala.

Put in separate groups the two teams had contrasting round robin results against strong opposition from the North East and West Yorkshire but both finished in 4th place which was enough for a quarter final place.

Kirk Deighton Blue had a strong start with a 2-0 win and then were very unlucky to lose to the hosts with a goal against in the last minute. The girls then suffered a 0-3 defeat against a dominant side who were later expelled from the competition for fielding academy players. The last round robin was a very frustrating affair as Kirk Deighton Blue fell behind and then took control of the game but couldn’t find a way past an inspired goalkeeper who made several great saves to keep them out.

Kirk Deighton Red drew their first game 0-0 and took a deserved 1-0 win in match two. They then played Redcar Town who had won last week’s CYGFL gala but they played really well to gain a point. The last game against Rothwell was decided by a penalty kick which unfortunately went against us.

This meant each team had to play the winners of the other round robin group. Kirk Deighton Blue showed tremendous character to recover from the disappointment of their group results and played exceptionally well to defeat the previously unbeaten Rothwell 2-1. Kirk Deighton Red also had to dig deep as they faced an excellent Brayton Belles side. It was an even, pulsating game which ended goalless and went to sudden death penalties. Brayton failed with theirs but Kirk Deighton Red converted to send them through to the semi-final where they would play …. Kirk Deighton Blue.

As befitting an inter club game the match was played in great spirits but with great intensity and the game ebbed and flowed. It was decided by a wonderful long-range strike which flew into the top corner of the net. Kirk Deighton Red were through to the final! The Kirk Deighton Blue girls were devastated but, showcasing the incredible camaraderie and team spirit within the squad, they were gracious in their congratulations and every single one of them stayed to support their teammates in the final.

The final was delayed as Kirk Deighton Red’s opponents were disqualified from the competition for fielding ineligible players which gave Redcar Town a reprieve. It was a tough competitive game with Kirk Deighton Red edging the first half. Against a strong wind the second half was more difficult but with few chances the final ended 0-0. We went straight into sudden death penalties and Redcar prevailed in the first round to take the trophy. Despite their tears the girls all went across to congratulate their opponents and can feel a bit unlucky to not win having only conceded one goal (and that a penalty) in the seven tournament matches.

It was a very good day for Kirk Deighton Rangers girls football. All of the girls distinguished themselves with their team spirit, determination, character, sportsmanship as well as displaying strong footballing skills and teamwork. As coaches we were both extremely proud of the way the girls played and conducted themselves throughout a long and enjoyable day.
