Kirk Deighton Rangers Under 8s finished the season on a real high by winning the Wetherby Tigers Gala on Saturday 4th June 2016.

We entered two teams into the tournament, which consisted of four groups of six teams from which the winner of each group went through to the semis. The team in Group A didn’t lose a single match, winning one (4-0) and drawing the other four (0-0; 0-0; 0-0; 1-1). They were on top in the majority of games and but for a little bit more composure in front of goal, could have come away with the couple of extra wins which would have seen them through to the semis. Unfortunately, though unbeaten, they were pipped to top spot so didn’t go through. Team captain Josh Lister controlled the midfield with Ralph Tate, Josh scoring 3 goals, whilst Johnnie Flannery toiled up front bagging the other 2 goals. Oscar Bennett defended responsibly and with James Steventon behind him in goal, they managed to only concede the one solitary goal. A great team performance all round.

The other team in Group D started with a 0-0 draw against a strong Pannal Ash team before cruising through the group with four comfortable wins – 6-0; 2-0; 6-0 & 5-0. The crucial 2-0 win against Tadcaster saw KDR win the group and qualify for the semi finals where they met Fulford. Again, KDR dominated the game winning 1-0 courtesy of a William Suttle goal and booked their place in the final against Clifford. In a tight final, KDR created the only real goal scoring opportunities, and when William Suttle scored the winner after another flowing move with only a minute to go, it was no more than the boys deserved. The final whistle was met by complete jubilation as we were deservedly crowned champions. Ollie Saltmarsh, George Meaking and William Suttle shared all 21 goals evenly between them, scoring seven each, whilst captain Dan Hughes and keeper Harry Manterfield were rock solid at the back, not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament.

A truly fantastic day and result for all involved with the KDR Under 8s and a true testament to the superb attitude and depth of talent in the entire squad.
